Measurements for made-to-measure Competition Skating Dresses and Gymnastics Leotards

How to take measurements for competition skating dresses and gymnastics leotards?

Make sure the dancer is wearing a snuggly fitting leotard. Take exact measurements without adding extra centimeters.

If you need the dress to make allowances for example for children who are still growing, please make a note. The seamstress will adjust the cutting patterns. Ths only works if measurements are exact.

A seamstress' advice: Measuring accurately for good fit of your skating competition dress and gymnastics leoatrd

Keep the measuring tape snug but not too tight. When measuring girth and your tape measure runs out, get a long tape. Guessing is difficult and inaccurate. Get someone else to measure you. Self-measurements are far too inaccurate. Girth (torso) is the most important measurement. If girth is wrong, the dress will not fit.

The Bust Measurement is taken around the fullest part of the chest. Make sure you keep the tape straight.

The Waist Measurement is taken at the natural waistline; this is the area between the belly button and the bottom of the rib cage. Bend to one side to find your natural waistline, then standing straight ensure the tape fits comfortably around your waist.

The Hip Measurement is taken around the fullest part of the buttocks. Keep the tape straight when measuring.

The Girth/Torso Measurement is taken from the center of the shoulder, down the fullest part of the chest, through the crotch and then up the back to the starting point. You should make a complete loop around the torso. Make sure you keep the tape tight and not twisted. Stance should be straight up but shoulders relaxed, feet shoulder distance apart, toes straight ahead.

Care Instructions for skating competition dresses and gymnastics leotards

Skating competition dresses and gymnastics leoatrds aredesigned for your performance and aim at producing an appealing effect. They are not an everyday clothing item.

Even when it is used properly, changes like wear and tear due to dancing, fading due to light, discoloration due to sweat or deodorants, and additional influences can still occur. For instance, aluminium hydroxychloride is used in antiperspirants (these hinder sweat production), which often produces yellow stains or causes black fabrics to fade.

On the whole, one can say that the more often or longer the skating dress or gymnastics leotard is worn, the stronger the effect these influences can have.

Due to the use of colored sythetic fiber and ornamentation with sequins, stones and other appliqués, there are special tips for maintenance:

Use of washing machines, tumble driers and wringing is proscribed. Avoid all detergents. Before you rinse your gymnastics leotard or competition skating dress, see if the colours fade out. If not, carefully rinse out the dress or leotard in lukewarm water and without rubbing. Intense colors will almost always fade.

Do not wring or rub fabrics with glittering surfaces. Always wash skating competition dresses or gymnastics leotards separately, so that dresses do not become entangled. To dry, place the competiton dress or gymnastics leotard between two towels for a short time and then let it dry on a coat hanger.

Dresses with sequins or stones should not be ironed. Otherwise, use the lowest temperature setting, and use a cloth. The iron soleplate must never directly touch the dress. Only do any of this if you are very experienced.

My advice is to have your competition dress or gymnastics leotard cleaned at a professional cleaner with experience in theatre/ballet costumes, bridal gowns or evening dresses.

Pasting Rhinestones on Skating Competition Dresses and Gymnastics Leotards

Sequins are sewn on, rhinestones are pasted. As the fabric stretches during dancing, this strains the splice between the rhinestone and the fabric and the rhinestones loosen.

For pasting rhinestones on elastic material, Hasulith HASULITH ® Dispersion-P works well for me.
